Later Years

VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education)

collage vce e1

Senior students are able to select from VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education), VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) and VET (Vocational Education and Training) programs. School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) are also offered to students to help them gain a national vocational qualification or credit toward their ATAR score. The VCE is the major form of qualification in Victoria for direct entry into University courses throughout Australia.

The College offers a wide range of VCE subjects and creates an individualised, holistic Senior School program for each of the Year 11 and 12 students. This is done in conjunction with the Later Years Pathways Team, Curriculum team and Pastoral Care Teachers.

Later Years comprises of Years 11 and 12. The school is proud of the range of options available to our senior students to cater to their diverse future aspirations. The Senior School prides itself on its strong work ethic based on values of Respect, Honesty, Care and Excellence. These values underpin students’ pursuit of their personal best and academic rigour, initiative and self-discipline are integral to a cooperative team culture which supports each student’s path to success in VCE, VCAL and VET. In The Senior School we expect a high level of personal commitment to studies as well as to wider school programs, policies and extra-curricular activities such as sport, community, college production and student leadership.

VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning)

VCAL is a recognised senior secondary qualification with a focus on “hands-on learning”. Students can participate in the Intermediate VCAL Program that is targeted at year 11 students or the Senior VCAL Program that is targeted at year 12 level.

Students who undertake VCAL at the Intermediate Level may wish to alter to a VCE pathway in Year 12, which is possible. Similarly, a student may complete VCE at year 11 and then transfer to the Senior VCAL Program in year 12, which is possible however, most VET (TAFE) courses offer a two-year certificate. Students will only get through one year of their certificate upon successful completion which will then give credits to the following year.

VCAL is the perfect pathway for those students who are interested in going on to training at TAFE, doing an apprenticeship/traineeship or entering the workforce after completing Year 12. By completing VCAL, you will gain practical experience and employability skills, as well as the skills you will need to go on to further training in the workplace or at TAFE.

The VCAL program at Alkira Secondary College includes four compulsory strands that students undertake on a Monday, Thursday and Friday:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Work-Related Skills
  • Personal Development Skills

As part of the VCAL program, all students are required to participate in a VET (TAFE) course on either a Tuesday or Wednesday. On top of the VET (TAFE) course students are also required to participate in at least 120 hours of Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) to build on the skills learnt at Alkira Secondary College and through their VET (TAFE) course on the alternate day to their VET (TAFE) course. Students are required to seek out their own Structured Workplace Learning.

By participating in VCAL, students can pathway to University it just means they complete a TAFE course first and then apply at University as a mature age student. Some VET (TAFE) courses have a direct link to university as well.

Students who are interested in the VCAL program should research appropriate TAFE courses. When researching be sure to type in VETis (VET in Schools). Most VETis programs are either a Certificate II or Certificate III level.
